1-)Alm. Rodon, Fr. Radon, İng. Radon. Radyumun radyoaktif bozunması sonucu meydana gelen, soy gazlar sınıfından bir element. Radon, radyumla beraber, tabii bir radyoaktif element olan uranyum-238 kaynağına dayanır. Atom numarası 86, kütle numarası 222 olup Rn sembolüyle gösterilir. Aynı kütle numaralı iki önemli izotop daha vardır. Biri toron olup, toryum-232 radyoaktif bozunma zincirindedir. Diğeri de uranyum-235 zincirinden olan aktinondur.

Özellikleri ve kullanılışı: Radon, oda sıcaklığında yoğunluğu 10 gram/litre olan renksiz bir gazdır. Erime noktası -71°C ve kaynama noktası da -62°C’dir. İnert (atıl) bir gaz olma tabiatından dolayı radyum ihtiva eden bütün çözelti veya füzyonlarda açığa çıkar. Radyum tabiatta bulunduğu halde radon atmosferde bulunur. Radon, bir alfa taneciği neşrederek yarılanma ömrü 3,85 gün olan radyum A’ya bozunur. Radyum A polonyumun bir izotopu olup, ardarda meydana gelen bozunma ürünleri katı maddelerin yüzeylerine yapışabilir ve atmosferden de kolaylıkla filtre edilebilir. On gramlık radyumdan hergün bir mm3 radon kazanılabilir. Yüksek radyoaktiflik gösteren radon, radyum çözeltilerinden pompalanır ve küçük tüplere kapatılır. Bu radyoaktif tüpler tıpta, radyoterapide kullanılır. Keza radon, radyoaktif maddelerin radyasyonlarının kimyasal etkilerini incelemek maksadıyla da istifade edilen bir maddedir.


2-)Atom numarası 86, atom ağırlığı 222 olan, radyum tuzunun su ile işlenmesinden, hidrojen ve oksijenle karışım durumunda elde edilen, boru yardımıyla sıvı hava içinden geçirilerek karışımdan ayrılan radyoaktif element (simgesi Rn).
