1-)Alm. Abszess, Fr. Abcés, İng. Abscess. İrin yapıcı özellikteki mikropların vücudun bir dokusunda yerleşerek, orada, içinde cerahat dolu bir boşluk yapması. Apse, iltihabın bir çeşidi olup, özelliği, dokunun eriyip içini cerahatın doldurmasıdır. Bazan da bir yaralanma, bir damarın bağlanması veya tıkanması sonucu ölü bir tabaka teşekkül eder ve buraya mikroorganizmaların yerleşmesi ile irin dolu bir boşluk meydana gelebilir.

Apseler iki türlüdür: Sıcak apse, soğuk apse.

Sıcak apse: Bu tip apsede ateş yükselir, ağrı, zonklama olur. Bu tür apse her zaman bir veya birkaç mikroptan dolayıdır, yani sebep mikroorganizmadır. Sıcak apsenin dört ana belirtisi: Sıcaklık, kırmızılık, ağrı ve şişkinliktir (Latince Calor, Rubor, Dolor, Tumor). Apsenin çevresi sert, ortası ise oynak ve yumuşaktır.

Soğuk apse: Verem hastalığında görülen bir apse türüdür. Öyle ki el şişkinlik üzerine konulunca sıcaklık alınamaz ve basmakla ağrı uyandırılamaz. Daha doğrusu sıcak apsedeki kat'i iltihap belirtileri yoktur. Fakat şişlik açılırsa, sıcak apsedeki gibi bir apse muhteviyatının olduğu görülür.

Soğuk apsenin iki özelliği vardır:

1. İçinde irin yapıcı mikroplar ve irinleşme yoktur. Apse muhteviyatını harab olmuş doku materyali meydana getirir.

2. Apsenin menşei ile görüldüğü yer arasında her zaman doğrudan bir münasebet yoktur. Mesela bel omurlarının soğuk apsesi (omurga veremi, pott hastalığı) kasıkta bir apse ile kendini belli edebilir.

Sıcak apselerin tedavisi, cerrahi müdahale iledir. Bu tedavi, apse yerinin açılması, irinin boşaltılması ve antibiyotikli merhemler ile muamele ve ilave olarak uygun antibiyotiklerin verilmesidir.

Soğuk apselerde ise verem ilaçları kullanılır. Bazan (mesela böbrek vereminde) olayın yayılmasını önlemek için cerrahi işlem yapılabilir.
