1-)Alm. Proton (n), Fr. Proton (m), İng. Proton. Atomların çekirdeğini meydana getiren iki temel tanecikten biri. Çekirdeği meydana getiren diğer tanecik nötron olup, elektrik yükü yoktur. Fakat proton artı (+) yüklü taneciktir.

Yunancada “ilk” anlamına gelen proton, 1886 yılında E. Goldstein tarafından kanal ışınlarında keşfedildi. 1911 yılında Ernest Rutherford, atomun ağırlığının bir yerde mevzilendiğini söyledi ve bu yere çekirdek, dedi. 1920 yılında hidrojen çekirdeğinde yalnız bir tane taneciğin olduğunu belirterek buna proton ismini verdi.

Özellikleri: Elektrik yükü elektronun yüküne eşit fakat ters işaretlidir ki, bu yük 4,80298x10-10 e.s.y.b. veya 1,602x10-19 coulomb’dur. Protonun kütlesi 1,6725x10-24 g olup, elektronun kütlesinin 1836,15 katıdır. Protonun yarıçapı yaklaşık 1,37x10-13 cm’dir. Atom çekirdeğindeki proton sayısı atom numarasına eşittir. Nötral atomda proton sayısı kadar elektron bulunur. Proton, “p” veya H+ şeklinde gösterilir. Hidrojenin çekirdeğinde nötron yoktur. Yani yalnız bir tane proton vardır. Bundan dolayı iyonlaştırılmış bir hidrojen (H+) proton demektir ve proton bu şekilde elde edilir.

Hızlandırılmış protonlardan nükleer reaksiyonlarda faydalanılır. Güneş ve yıldızlarda proton-proton reaksiyonları sonucu He meydana gelirken 26,7 MeV enerji açığa çıkar. Hızlandırılmış protonlar tıp, ziraat, fizik ve kimya alanlarında kullanılır. Kanserli hücrelerin tedavisinde X ışınlarından daha iyidir. İnsan vücudundan geçen protonlar, vücut yoğunluğuna duyarlı olduğundan kanserli bölgenin teşhisinde kullanılır.
